‘See, Smell, Cut, Taste, Collaborate’- A lesson plan from the University of Oslo.

Developed by The University of Oslo, this lesson uses a broad range of techniques to teach children about fruit and where it comes from.

Split into 3 sections, this lesson takes place in the classroom and the botanic garden. Children research questions about fruits through discussion, practical activities, reading and writing and attempt to grow some for themselves.

The first session, in the classroom, takes the form of a question and answer based discussion, in which the children are asked to discuss questions such as ‘what is a fruit and what is a vegetable?’ and ‘what is the definition of a berry?’  They are asked to classify fruits and discuss their ideas. This introduces them to the ideas that they will need to be familiar with for the rest of the lesson.

In the next session, in the botanic garden, children are asked to examine fruits, they are able to visit the plants from which they came and so gain an appreciation for where their food comes from. They then produce a mini glasshouse in a plastic bottle, in which they grow seeds form the fruits they have been investigating.

In the final session young people are asked to research questions such as, ‘where do the plants you have been growing originate from?’ They then present this information to the class.

This lesson engages young people with fruits and where they come from through a variety of research approaches and settings and therefore ensures that they are practising a wide range of skills and that all learners are catered for.  It is aimed at children aged 5 to 8 years and takes a total of 5 hours to complete.
