‘Project Survival’- A lesson plan from the University of Sofia.

Are you looking for new and exciting ways to teach young people about botany and biodiversity?

Developed by the University of Sofia, as part of the INQUIRE project, through this role play, young people will learn about botany and the importance of plants and biodiversity, as well as experience how scientists work.

Students play the roles of groups of scientists who have been asked, by a television show, to define the best area of land to use as a resource during a time of disaster. To do this they research and compare several areas of land. They are required to assess the populations of medicinal and edible plants in comparison to poisonous in each area and discuss their findings to come to a conclusion.

By completing this activity, young people learn to recognise a variety of plants and how to design and execute their own experiments, whilst ensuring they do not damage any plants in the study area. They therefore, experience how scientists work, through researching via both practical investigations and using a resource library, and gain an appreciation of the importance of biodiversity.
