A lesson plan about plants and the climate from Schulbiologisches Zentrum, Hannover.

‘Plants and Climate’ is a lesson that engages students in investigating the morphology of plants in relation to their natural climate zone and habitat.


‘Why have most cacti no leaves and Spanish Moss no roots? Does the shape of plants have something to do with climate or other abiotic habitat-based characteristics?’ These are just a few of the questions that lead students’ investigations during this lesson.  


The activities cover a huge amount of scientific content ranging from plant morphology and anatomy to physiology. Students get to investigate living plants displayed in the garden and build up hypotheses on the advantages for survival of each plant based on the morphological structures of the plants. The pupils investigate the specific morphology of each plant using various scientific methods and conduct certain experiments related to physiological plant processes.Subsequently, they relate climate diagrams to the respective plants, justifying how the specific morphology of each corresponds to the climatic conditions to the climate diagram.

Schulbiologisches Zentrum, Hannover -Partners in the INQUIRE project -developed this  lesson plan, which is available to download, and contains details of how to structure this lesson, resources, such as climate diagrams and images to introduce discussion along with a list of suggested plants.
