‘Can you see the difference between wind pollinated and insect pollinated flowers?’- a lesson plan from the National Botanic Garden of Belgium.

Are you looking for resources to introduce young people to the concept of biodiversity and different methods of pollination?  

This lesson plan has been developed by the Botanic Garden of Belgium as part of the INQUIRE project. Whilst delivering scientific content, through inquiry, this lesson gets young people thinking about evolution and biodiversity.

This lesson aims to teach young people to recognise flowers and other plant parts. Through their own discussions, young people will encounter the different features and adaptations of flowers, associated with wind and insect pollinated plants, and their functions. They will use these observations to compare and begin to classify plants. This will build an understanding of biodiversity and evolution.

The lesson takes teaching out of the classroom and begins with a walk to collect either physical samples or photographs of flowers to discuss, which not only provides context for the knowledge they will gain but also reinforces its relevance.

The lesson takes an hour to complete and is aimed at young people ages 10 to 14 years old
