‘Explorers in the botanic garden’- a lesson plan from the Botanic Garden of the University of Coimbra.

Are you looking for lessons to teach young people about biodiversity in an engaging and challenging way?  

‘Explorers in the botanic garden’ is a lesson that encourages students to observe the different habitats in the garden and the species that live there, recognizing how and why biodiversity varies between habitats, space and time and can change through the year(s).

This flexible lesson was develop by the Botanic Garden of the University of Coimbra and is suitable for a wide range of ages. During the lesson, young people design and execute investigations to assess and compare the biodiversity of certain outdoor areas. To complete this task they must make hypotheses and discuss what and how to observe abiotic and biotic elements of the ecosystems, how best to record their findings, what their results indicate and how to compile and communicate their results and conclusions.  The lesson can stand alone, as a one off, or repeated during different seasons to enhance the comparative element of the exercise.

In addition to educating young people about scientific content and practise the young people involved are also contributing to a resource for others to use. The University of Coimbra have stored all the observations made by groups of young people to build a database of biodiversity within the garden.
