‘A competition: Who can find the best tree for our avenue?’- a lesson plan from the Rhododendron Park and Uni Bremen, Germany

Are you looking for resources to get young people engaged with plant science in a new and interesting way?  

This lesson plan has been developed by the Rhododendron Park and Botanic Garden and University of Bremen,as part of the INQUIRE project. Whilst delivering scientific content in an engaging way, this exciting IBSE activity also introduces young people to the role of landscape architect, develops self directed study through group and individual work and exercises communication skills.

This lesson delivers content about conditions for plant growth and adaptation whilst developing practical skills of:  observation, presentation of information, analysis and strategising, all with a healthy dose of competition to keep things exciting.
During these activities, young people are asked to play the part of landscape architects competing for a contract to plan and plant an avenue of trees. This requires the young people to research different areas, like, soil pH and structure, visual features of trees and root characteristics, to decide what species of tree they wish to plant. They must then pitch this information to others.
