INQUIRE Course Feedback Reports

Between 2011 and 2013, the INQUIRE courses and pilot courses trained 303 participants across 15 countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain and UK). The feedback reports were written using interviews, questionnaires, evaluation sheets and World Café workshops, highlighting what participants felt were the strengths of the course, how INQUIRE is influencing their practice, and what could be done better. The results of the feedback process were written into two reports: one about the Pilot INQUIRE course and another focussing on the INQUIRE courses which ran in the 2012-2013 school year.

The reports found that all participants acknowledged Inquiry-Based Science education (IBSE) as an effective methodology for engaging students. Their feedback suggests that many students’ social skills improved using IBSE methods, as well as their engagement in class, moreover, it would appear that weaker or more passive students especially benefited. There is also discussion of the potential presented by botanic gardens- many felt there were multiple benefits to outdoor spaces as learning venues. Reflective practice is an important aspect of the INQUIRE programme and the reports include detailed descriptions of how this has influenced participants’ day to day practice. 

Though courses were generally rated positively, the feedback reports show there’s still room for improvement. Although feedback varied from place to place, the recurring themes were requests for open-ended continuation of the course,  distance learning opportunities, more interaction between schools, periodic updates as new resources become available, more time allowed for reflective sessions and more high-quality interdisciplinary links.

The Feedback reports also look at the legacy of the INQUIRE courses. Many reported that they will run more sessions outdoors and most say that they will change their teaching practice as a result. The reports also illustrate how many hope to involve their colleagues and home institutions in developing IBSE activities, whilst others propose using IBSE activities to reach out to new audiences or local communities.
