How to develop IBSE questioning skills – INQUIRE teaching resource

Are you training teachers or educators on Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE) and are interested in developing their questioning skills? Or are you a teacher/educator eager to learn more about the sort of open questions that can guide students’ investigations? Find out what is an IBSE style question and how to design one by reading the activity plan and PowerPoint presentation developed for the INQUIRE course at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

According to Artigue et al.( 2012) the process of inquiry in an IBSE lesson can begin by trying to make sense of a phenomenon, or answer a question, about why something behaves in a certain way or takes the form it does. Hence, one of the essential features of IBSE is the Question/Questioning which refers to ‘students investigating a scientifically oriented question’. Levy et al. (in preparation) explain that if the IBSE approach is Open it is likely that the student will pose the scientifically oriented question. In a more structured IBSE approach the student is given the scientifically oriented question by the teacher. In both cases the teacher will need skills to identify the right questions that can stimulate meaningful investigations.

You can use the KEW INQUIRE resources (activity plan and PowerPoint presentation) to either train teachers/educators on developing their questioning skills or to simply improve your skills when you deliver an IBSE lesson as part of your teaching practice. These resources have been very successful during the INQUIRE courses in encouraging participants’ discussions and understanding of what can be regarded as an IBSE question and most of the INQUIRE Partners have included it in their training programme.
