This paper is a comprehensive and informative review of the current literature 'relating to the features of inquiry-based science education (IBSE) in formal and informal settings for learners of school age.' It looks at IBSE from a theoretical, historical and practical point of view, in addition to outlining a succinct and workable definition of IBSE which is summarised here.

The paper has been produced as part of the Pathway project which supports the delivery of science education through inquiry.
