Arbor Day is an annual arbor festival. Tree of the Year 2012 is the European Larch (Larix dedicua).

History of Arbor Day

The idea behind Arbor Day originated in the US state of Nebraska. The first settlers who arrived there found a landscape with barely any trees.  Among the pioneers moving into the Nebraska Territory in 1854 was J. Sterling Morton from Detroit. He and his wife were nature lovers, and the home they established in Nebraska was quickly planted with trees, shrubs and flowers. Morton was a journalist who soon became editor of Nebraska´s finest newspaper - a forum that he used to spread agricultural information and his enthusiasm for trees to an equally enthusiastic audience.

On January 4, 1872, Morton first proposed a tree-planting holiday to be called "Arbor Day" at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture. The date was set for April 10, 1872. It was estimated that one million trees were planted in Nebraska on that first Arbor Day. That was the start of Arbor Day, which spread in a triumphant procession right across the United States and to this day continues motivating people to get involved in tree-related activities.

On November 27, 1951, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommended establishing a "World Arbor Festival Day“.

Arbor Day in Germany

Arbor Day is an annual international arbor festival. The "tree of the year" can take centre stage in this event, though this is not necessary.

However you spend this day - alone, with your partner, family or friends, or in a club - keep close to trees or do things related to them in an informal and enjoyable way or in a serious and professional spirit, but always with your heart, following you own distinctive and creative vision.

Take a nature hike - visit special trees

Do you have a favorite tree? Can you recall an occasion when you experienced something special close to a tree or under a tree? Protection from a storm, shade on a hot summer´s day, an unusual wildlife observation, your very first kiss? Sitting under a tree painting a picture or writing a poem? Go and visit that tree once again!
