An excellent estimation

El Census of Marine Life se inició en el año 2000 y terminó en 2010. El análisis de la inmensa cantidad de datos aún sigue en marcha y seguramente dará lugar a nuevas publicaciones durante los próximos años.

No more room for doubt:  there are about 8.7 million species of animals and plants on the planet., 2.2 million of them living in water. Up until now, estimates have varied from 3 to100 million. The Census of Marine Life project has made this final calculation using a new statistical method to estimate the distribution of species on the basis of possible ramifications of the phylogenetic tree. Bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms were excluded from the calculation.

 The Census of Marine Life was begun  in 2000 and ended in 2010. Analysis of the vast amount of data collected is still underway and will undoubtedly lead to new publications in the years to come.
