Botanists from MSU Botanic Garden Discover and Describe New Genus of Umbrelliferae

Staff at MSU Botanic Garden have recently described a new genus of plants belonging to the Umbrelliferae family. The plant, which was previously known from just 3 herbarium collections, has been newly collected and studied. It’s a rare plant, which grows only in the Tschulak Mountains (Kazakhstan).

Plant diversity results in higher energy yield

Plant monocultures are considered to be highly efficient, but imply a radical intervention in the ecological balance. A German research team has now shown that use of grassland as an energy source becomes more efficient with increasing species diversity. The study is part of the "Jena Experiment", one of the greatest biodiversity experiments in Europe.
